Why Setting Goals Doesn’t Work For Successful Entrepreneurs

Why setting goals doesn't work for successful entrepreneurs? If you are an entrepreneur you are probably setting goals right now.

If you are an entrepreneur, you are probably setting goals right now. You're probably setting goals for yourself, your business, and your life. But I want to show you why setting goals does not work for the most successful entrepreneurs that I've worked with over the last 20 years.

The Myth of Setting Goals

If you're a business owner, or if you want to own your own business, one of the things you probably heard a million times is that you've got to set your goals. It's one of the most important pieces of advice we hear repeatedly in the industry. And at first glance, there's nothing wrong with setting goals.

We humans are inherently goal-oriented organisms. When we see something we desire, whether it's a new car, a new house, making more money, or going on vacations, we set goals to achieve these desires.

However, there's a specific problem I've noticed over the last two decades while helping my clients amass over $2.7 billion in sales: goals tend to stay out there somewhere, distant and intangible.

The Disconnect: Goals vs. Plans

Consider this scenario: You say to yourself, "My goal is to make a million dollars," and it feels like that goal is floating out there somewhere, not quite within reach. It's like your brain acknowledges it but doesn't fully engage with it.

This is where the difference between goals and plans becomes crucial.

Goals vs. Plans

Think about it this way:

  • Do you go to your wedding, or do you plan your wedding?
  • Do you goal your vacation, or do you plan your vacation?
  • Do you go on a trip, or do you plan your trip?

Goals are amorphous and distant, while plans are concrete and actionable. When you plan, you take steps, set deadlines, and create a roadmap to reach your destination. This shift in mindset can make all the difference in your journey as an entrepreneur.

The Power of Planning

What I've observed while working with some of the world's most successful entrepreneurs and interviewing over a hundred multimillionaires and even a few billionaires is that, instead of having goals, they make plans.

Goals

A person with a plan is more likely to succeed than a person with a goal.

The Three Major Milestones

As a business entrepreneur, you'll encounter three major milestones on your journey to success:

1. The $10,000 Milestone

The first major milestone is when you make your first ten thousand dollars online. This is when you become a true entrepreneur. It signifies your ability to generate income and sustain your business.

2. The 6-Figure Milestone

The second milestone is when you're making a 100K a year, achieving 6-figures annually. This is when you become an expert in your field. You've mastered your craft and established yourself as a reliable authority.

3. The Million-Dollar Milestone

The third milestone is when you hit your first million dollars in earnings. At this point, you're a true influencer. Your success not only impacts your life but also inspires and influences others.

Conclusion

Whether you aspire to be an entrepreneur, an expert, or an influencer, the key lies in making plans rather than setting vague goals. It's about mastering both your inner and outer game of success.
