The Little-Known Story Behind A Christmas Carol

In the fall of 1843, Charles Dickens, a British novelist, found himself in a tight spot financially. His previous novels had done okay, but the bills were piling up, and the mortgage was looming large.

One evening, as he took a walk along the Thames, he wandered into a rough London neighborhood. The streets were filled with garbage, gutters were overflowing with sewage, and pickpockets and streetwalkers roamed freely.

Memories of a Hard Childhood

This scene brought back memories of Dickens' own troubled childhood. His father had been sent to debtor’s prison, and at the tender age of 12, Dickens was forced to work. He spent long days pasting labels on pots of boot polish, working twelve hours a day, six days a week.

A Spark of Inspiration

As Dickens walked back home, an idea struck him. He thought of writing a Christmas story filled with cheer and goodwill for those who, like him, had suffered poverty and fear. But with only three months until Christmas, he wondered if he could finish it in time. Realizing it had to be a short book rather than a full-length novel, he got to work immediately.

The Creation of A Christmas Carol

Before long, Dickens had penned A Christmas Carol. He poured his heart into the project, even designing the cover himself. Insisted on a gold-stamped cover with a red and green title page and several hand-colored etchings—an expensive design, but he held firm to his vision of making the book affordable for the widest possible audience. He set the price at just five shillings a copy.

An Overwhelming Response

The response was phenomenal. The first 6,000 copies sold out by Christmas Eve. Today, Dickens’ story is considered a literary classic.

Dickens himself was deeply affected by writing the story. He later told a journalist, “I was very much affected by that little book and quite reluctant to lay it aside even for a moment.” Despite the low price, Dickens didn’t make much profit from the sales. In many ways, it was a gift to the public.

The Impact and Legacy

A Wider Audience

The popularity of A Christmas Carol created a much larger audience for Dickens’ subsequent works. His later novels, including David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations, all became highly popular and financially successful, securing his place in literary history forever.
