How to Build Confidence and Influence People by Public Speaking

I love public speaking.

I know, weird right?

You’ve heard the statistics that say most adults list “speaking in public” as their #1 fear – even higher than the fear of death!

If so many people fear public speaking, why do I love it so much?

More importantly, why should YOU love public speaking?

Well, I can answer the first question very easily.

I grew up in a theater family. When I was growing up, my father worked as the director of a summer theater group in Kennebunkport, Maine.

During breaks in rehearsal, my brother and I would get up on stage and act out “Ernie and Bert” routines from Sesame Street.

(I was Ernie.)

Of course, the adults would ooh and ahh and “Isn’t he cute?”

I was about 4 or 5 years old.

So, from a very young age, my brain began to associate “perform on stage” with “get love and attention”.

See how that works?

Now, I know that most people do not grow up in a family where one of the parents works as a theater director or who performs Ernie and Bert routines before entering grade school.

Which is one reason that I have a unique perspective on this whole area of public speaking and being in front of large groups of people.

In fact, when I’m speaking in public, the larger the group, the more relaxed and happy I feel.

That’s the exact opposite of how most people approach this area of public speaking.

Most people approach public speaking with fear and dread and “How can I get out of this?”

But here are 3 reasons why you should embrace, not fear, public speaking…

1. Public speaking builds your confidence.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is action in the face of fear.

If you’re scared of public speaking, that’s all the more reason to do it…

Because on the other side of your fear lies your freedom.

2. Public speaking attracts more clients.

I’ve been teaching and mentoring coaches, speakers, authors, healers, and mission-driven entrepreneurs to grow their business and have more freedom since 1997.

In all that time, public speaking is simply the best method I’ve found to attract new clients.

Whether doing our own live events like Power Habits® Academy – where we help coaches, speakers, authors, healers, and mission-driven entrepreneurs to share their message and get handsomely paid for it – or speaking at other people’s events, public speaking has allowed me to attract high-level clients like nothing else.

3. Public speaking increases your influence.

Let’s face it – when you’re standing on stage speaking to a group of people, by definition, you’re a center of influence.

Whether it’s speaking to 40 people at your local Chamber of Commerce, or 400 people at a national seminar, public speaking will increase your influence faster than almost anything else.
