My father never approved of me. It didn’t matter that I won awards, skipped 8th grade, graduated a year early and still graduated second in my class, was a National Merit Scholar and got full scholarships to college. No matter what I did or how many awards I won, my old man made it clear that nothing I did was good enough.
My older brother, however, had a different upbringing. In my father’s eyes, my older brother could do no wrong.
Did that affect me at all? Of course it did!
I ended up being a people-pleasing nice guy in a vain attempt to get my old man’s approval. Needless to say, it didn’t work.
Not only did it not work, it also made me miserable – to the point that I decided to commit suicide at age 25. Only by a miracle at the very last moment did I make the decision not to take my own life.
What I learned from that experience was…
It sucks to not be yourself.
What It Means to Be Yourself
To learn how to be yourself means 3 things:
I founded SuccessClinic.com in my college dorm room in 1997 with $800 and a book on how to do html.
One of the main reasons I started my coaching company was to change the way the personal growth industry delivers training, information and experiences.
A big part of that has meant helping my coaching clients to be themselves.
Since then, my clients have added more than $100 million in sales – you can see just a few of our client success stories at NoahStJohn.com/praise
Why It’s So Important to Be Yourself
Have you ever noticed that when you try to be someone else, it doesn’t work anyway?
And when you allow yourself to be yourself, good things happen?
Imagine not having to be someone else…
Not having to pretend to be something you’re not…
Not having to hide Who You Really Are.
That feeling may be the ultimate expression of Personal Freedom.
Bottom line: When you stop trying to be something or someone you’re not, your stress level goes down and you feel a lot happier.
How to Be Yourself
Contrary to popular belief, you can’t actually “make other people happy.”
Other people can be happy or not. It’s really up to them.
Let go of your need to make others happy. When you’re with other people, do this instead:
3. Surround yourself with Loving Mirrors – people who believe in you.
The term Loving Mirror was first popularized in my book Permission to Succeed®, published by the Chicken Soup for the Soul publisher.
Since then, I’ve taught tens of thousands of people how to engage their Loving Mirrors through a process called The Power Habits® of Unconsciously Successful People.
You can get my free video training series on The Power Habits® of Unconsciously Successful People at
