As a kid, I never had much confidence. Growing up poor in a rich neighborhood, my family didn’t have nice things like the other kids did.
Plus, I had a face full of acne, wore Coke-bottle glasses, and I didn’t have shoulder-length hair – I had shoulder-WIDTH hair.
Even though I skipped 8th grade, graduated second in my class, and got full scholarships to college, I still grew up with a feeling of being “less than” everyone else.
That’s why, when I started SuccessClinic.com in my college dorm room in 1997 with $800 and a book on how to do html, I knew that I’d have to somehow find the confidence to keep going… even though I had no idea how to be confident.
So the question is, how to be confident?
What It Means to Be Confident
Being confident means 3 things:
- Believing in your own abilities.
- Knowing you can handle whatever life throws at you.
- Realizing that You Are Enough.
For example, when I started SuccessClinic.com, I had no idea how to run a successful business, let alone a successful online business.
But I knew I wanted to start an email newsletter to get my ideas out to the world. As I thought about what to call it, the name that came to me was “You Are Enough” – because that was the message I really wanted to tell people.
That’s why the name of my first newsletter from way back in 1997 was “You Are Enough” – to remind people of Who They Really Are.
Why It’s So Important to Be Confident
It’s important to know how to be confident because when you’re not confident, you’re coming from a place of “not enough”.
After coaching thousands of people and writing 10 books on the subjects of personal and business growth, I’ve realized that the default human belief is “I’m not enough.”
Imagine knowing that you ARE enough…
Feeling confident, no matter what the situation…
Knowing that you can handle whatever life throws at you.
These are some of the good things that happen when you have true, authentic confidence.
How to Be Confident – 5 Steps
Use my “L.I.K.E.S. Method” to be more confident…
- Look people in the eye. Put your phone away when you’re talking to someone.
- Improve your posture. Your posture has a definite effect on your confidence of lack of it.
- Know your strengths. Don’t be ashamed of what you’re really good at.
- Expand your sphere of influence. The more you reach out to people, the more confident you’ll become.
- Stop trying to please everyone. What others think of you is none of your business.
The point of being confident is not some puffed-up act where you try to be something you’re not.
On the contrary, true confidence comes from accepting who you are, and stopping trying to please everyone by pretending to be something you’re not.
