Are Your Habits Helping or Hurting You?

A habit is a tendency to act in a particular way in a particular situation.

It’s a pattern of behavior that a person typically does in response to a given situation or set of circumstances.

That’s the definition, but the interesting question is why we have habits and what they have to do with success anyway.

Your brain is wired to use the least amount of energy to accomplish the tasks it needs to do.

A habit is your brain’s attempt to conserve energy, to put some things on autopilot, so that you can put all your focus on mastering the next challenge of life.

For example, you may have the habit of pushing through afternoon fatigue by taking a jolt of caffeine, drinking coffee or soda, or eating chocolate or sugar.

The habit of caffeine or sugar is your brain helping you get through the day so that you can focus on your work.

Now, there are productive habits and unproductive habits – habits that eventually increase your bottom line and well-being or decrease it.

The brain doesn’t judge. It simply does the task you set before it in the most efficient way.

For instance, do you remember how hard it was to learn how to drive? (Not to mention the impact on whoever taught you!)

But now that you’ve fully mastered the skill of driving, you literally don’t think about it.

That’s because your brain is a habit-creating machine.

  Are your habits helping or hurting you?

Your brain conserves as much energy as possible so it can effectively tackle truly momentous things, like fighting predators and raising children.

And that’s both the good news AND the bad news about habits and their relationship to success.

It’s fantastic that you don’t have to consciously think every time you perform simple tasks like tying your shoes, brushing your teeth, or backing your car out of the driveway.

However, because your brain is so efficient, that also makes it very difficult to CHANGE a habit – even when you WANT to change it.

Because your brain is essentially saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

But sometimes you do want to change it.

You want to drop your bad habits, and develop new, healthy habits; productive habits that boost your income, your health, and your happiness.

Perhaps you’d even like to turn success itself into a habit – and make success as automatic as brushing your teeth or tying your shoes.
